EVIDENCIAS DEL FUTURO

No es extraño que el arte, desde sus diversas poéticas, ofrezca la oportunidad para comprender mejor quiénes fuimos, quiénes somos y en quiénes vamos camino de convertirnos. Esta motivación que aúna lo visual, lo emocional y lo racional, es la que destaca en la obra del artista Xulio Lago (Vigo, 1970). De formación autodidacta, ha trabajado todo tipo de materiales. De hecho, en su experimentación polimatérica utiliza pigmentos, resinas, papel, arpillera, telas, óxidos, hierro y madera. Resaltando la preponderancia de madera y hierro con una especial predilección por la oxidación, un proceso donde el oxígeno se une con los elementos y con la vida y donde el artista busca valores plásticos para sus esculturas.

Los espacios y volúmenes que determinan las formas geométricas forman parte de una indagación creativa con la que logra alcanzar cotas de una abstracción lírica de marcado carácter expresivo. Una tendencia que se observa tanto en su pintura como en su escultura y que parece ser algo implícito a su potencial imaginativo. El conjunto de su obra remite al expresionismo abstracto de las pinturas de Leopoldo Nóvoa, a la abstracción lírica de Alberto Burri y al constructivismo de las creaciones escultóricas de Jorge de Oteiza, dándole un sello propio y personal donde sobresalen referencias a su Galicia natal y su interés por la música, el ritmo y la armonía.

Con una larga trayectoria profesional y creativa que oscila entre la pintura y la escultura, Xulio Lago encaja en la idea de un artista que rastrea en la memoria de un lugar y de una identidad que nos interpela y busca respuestas en el arte. Su obra recrea la práctica artística, inmersa en la complejidad espacial y pictórica, con la que parece regresar al pasado para mostrar las evidencias del futuro. Descubrir y reconocer la discursividad estética con la que trabaja la poética de los materiales, se convierte en un reto para una mirada atenta a sus composiciones y creaciones. La presencia incierta y alterable de cuanto nos rodea es una constante a la que el artista da resolución técnica con una gran madurez artística, hasta el punto de situarse en el panorama actual del arte gallego dentro de una comunidad cultural que dialoga con lo local y lo universal. Todo un mérito propio de la interpelación e interpretación que la elocuencia de su obra merece.

EVIDENCES OF THE FUTURE

It is not unusual for art, through its various poetics, to offer an opportunity to better understand who we were, who we are, and who we are on the path to becoming. This motivation, which brings together the visual, the emotional, and the rational, stands out in the work of artist Xulio Lago (Vigo, 1970). Self-taught in his training, he has worked with all kinds of materials. In fact, in his polymaterial experimentation he uses pigments, resins, paper, burlap, fabrics, oxides, iron, and wood. He particularly emphasizes the predominance of wood and iron, with a special preference for oxidation — a process in which oxygen joins with elements and with life, and where the artist seeks plastic values for his sculptures.

The spaces and volumes defined by geometric forms are part of a creative inquiry through which he achieves a lyrical abstraction with a strongly expressive character. This tendency is visible both in his painting and in his sculpture, and seems to be something implicit in his imaginative potential. His body of work recalls the abstract expressionism of Leopoldo Nóvoa’s paintings, the lyrical abstraction of Alberto Burri, and the constructivism of Jorge de Oteiza’s sculptural creations, while giving them his own distinctive stamp, full of references to his native Galicia and his interest in music, rhythm, and harmony.

With a long professional and creative trajectory oscillating between painting and sculpture, Xulio Lago embodies the idea of an artist who explores the memory of a place and an identity that challenges us and seeks answers in art. His work recreates artistic practice, immersed in spatial and pictorial complexity, through which he seems to return to the past in order to reveal the evidences of the future. Discovering and recognizing the aesthetic discursiveness with which he works the poetics of materials becomes a challenge for an attentive gaze upon his compositions and creations. The uncertain and mutable presence of everything around us is a constant that the artist resolves technically with great artistic maturity, to the point of positioning himself within the current panorama of Galician art as part of a cultural community that dialogues with both the local and the universal. A merit in itself, worthy of the interpellation and interpretation that the eloquence of his work deserves.
